Welcome to swell

In 2007 the eleven schools in the South Wellington primary schools cluster  entered into a partnership with the New Zealand Ministry of Education as part of the 'Extending High Standards Across Schools' initiative. Over four years the cluster will work together on a project to establish the swell network of learning communities as a vehicle for raising the tide of achievement in South Wellington schools. This  website is the collaborative centre for the swell network.

swell project goals

At the end of the project we intend to be an effective network of learning communities, promoting and sustaining the learning of all (children, teachers, whanau) in the SWELL community, with the collective purpose of enhancing the engagement and achievement of students.

In particular we will have …

  • Established sustainable systems and procedures for sharing expertise in and amongst schools in the SWELL community; and,
  • Established sustainable systems for the collaborative development of expertise by schools in the SWELL community.

Whilst developing the systems and procedures for the SWELL network of learning communities we will have …

  • Raised the capability of teachers and students to implement authentic learning;
  • Raised the capability of students to manage self;
  • Raised the capability of students to participate and contribute; and,
  • Reduced the disparity in achievement between high and low achieving students in our schools.

Where is swell?

The swell network consists of eleven schools in the South Wellington primary schools cluster. Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand and the South Wellington cluster is located in an around Wellington's south coast.

The cluster is close to the head of Te Ika a Maui (the fish of Maui) and borders the spot where the taniwha Whataitai died when trying to break out of the lake which became Te Whanganui a Tara (Wellington Harbour).
